From March 25 to 29, BFS organized a detailed socio-economic survey in the two selected pilot sub-catchments in the upper watershed areas of the Miyun Reservoir. One pilot is in Huairou District’s Xiaoliangqian Village, and the other is in Hebei Province’s Xiaowopu Village. Based on collected information on natural resources and socio-economic baseline conditions, the survey group delineated the village land use status quo, together with stakeholders at county, township and village level. The SWOT analysis was used to understand detailed strengths and potentiality of resources in the communities as well as risks for project implementation. 18 farmers were interviewed to know their household conditions and participation willingness. Finally, a villager representative assembly was called at each village, to further collect villagers’ suggestions on project implementation.

BFS’s initiative in the Miyun Reservoir Watershed has been received support from national and international organizations, such as the Beijing Science & Technology Committee, IUCN and Forest Trends. There will be two pilots in the upper watershed areas for demonstration of sustainable community livelihood and agricultural techniques as well as pollution control measures, to ensure that water supply of the capital can be safeguard and the livelihood of local farmers can be improved at the same time.
